Changing Water Into Wine with Dr. Bott's DVIator
If you're a PC user who has cast an envious eye toward Apple's line of sleek, clear-colored flat panel displays, but thought there was no way to use such coveted devices with your computer, here's a product that can help you cross that bridge. A company called Dr. Bott is offering DVIator, ($94.95) a cable and power supply combination that can do the computer equivalent of changing water into wine. Photographic Virtual Reality to Bring 100 Years of Aviation History to Life
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of manned flight this year with a new facility and new high-tech public access to aircraft and space artifacts. The 11 million visitors a year to the National Air and Space Museum will be able to fully enjoy truly historic aviation displays in person, while looking inside the craft using virtual reality.

Creating clouds and basic atmospheric features
This week we kick off a new series of tutorials for Adobe Photoshop: sky effects. There comes a time in every designer's life when he or she needs to create skies with a photographic quality. Maybe you're compositing a masked out image onto a moody, moonlit scene. Maybe you need to create a sky for a backdrop for an animation. Whatever the reason, here's a simple, step by step guide for creating your basic sky with clouds and haze using just the tools available in Photoshop.

Creating wet edge effects in Macromedia Freehand MX
Did you ever think you'd see the day when the word "painterly" could be applied to a vector graphics program? I didn't. For the longest time I thought illustration apps were good for nothing more than creating Patrick Nagel knockoffs and PeeChee™ notebook-style graphics. And I was completely right, if a little snotty about the whole thing. But the latest generation of applications from Macromedia, Creature House and Adobe have introduced creative tools that finally make it possible to draw outside the lines (or paths or polygons or Bezigons) while maintaining the advantages of vector-based graphics applications--editability and resolution independence.

25 bristled and textured brushes
I've posted an awful lot of bristle-style brushes for just about every program out there, but never for Adobe Photoshop. The main reason for this is that Photoshop doesn't support stretch-style brushes, so it's difficult to give a bristly look to a brush whose texture is maintained with a heavy application of color. And so I set out to find a way around this. The result is this week's free download, a collection of 25 textured brushes that will hopefully satisfy your craving for natural media emulation.

Technicolor Media Asset Management Services Store, Manage, Access, Process and Distribute Digital Assets Globally
Thomson today announced the launch of its Technicolor Media Asset Management (MAM) service. The new service, leveraging both in-house Thomson expertise and a content management system from IBM and its strategic partner Ancept, provides an integrated platform for the digital storage, management, access, processing, and distribution of all forms of entertainment content.

Microsoft also settles lawsuit over technology usage
Announced a series of agreements with Microsoft Corporation that grant Microsoft licensing rights for Immersion's patent portfolio, which is primarily directed to haptic technologies (the sense of touch). The agreements consist of a $26 million payment from Microsoft for licensing rights and an equity investment, as well as a $9 million convertible debenture from Immersion with 48 months draw down rights.
