Touch-panel technology gets better and easier to navigate
If you haven’t looked at touch panels lately, you may be surprised. The technology has progressed exponentially over the past few years. These sleek touch-sensitive panels can now handle full-motion video, integrate seamlessly with PowerPoint presentations, and operate wirelessly from anywhere in a room.
Polycom unifies the single-box videoconferencing experience
If you haven’t followed the evolution of Polycom and videoconferencing in the past few years, you may be surprised by all the changes. There has been massive consolidation in the industry. “Basically we’re down to two major vendors: Polycom www.polycom.com and Tandberg www.tandberg.com,” says Lou Latham, an analyst with the Gartner research firm, based in Stamford, Connecticut. “Tandberg is the Mercedes, with a high level of engineering. Polycom is taking more of the General Motors approach, with a very broad scope of functionality.” Tandberg’s products tend to be high-end, while Polycom’s products run the gamut from low- to high-end.
3D plant creation for Adobe Photoshop
So you need to composite some greenery into an image. Maybe you need to dummy some trees into an architectural rendering. Maybe you need to pretty up a nature scene for an advertising layout. Whatever the reason, you're looking forward to some tedious work ahead: finding the right tree in the right lighting conditions to shoot and then masking out the image; modeling a tree in a 3D application and then, through trial and error, trying to get it to look right in your composition; or even spending the time drawing the tree by hand. But for those of you who'd prefer another way, Digital Element has developed Verdant, a plugin that allows you to generate 3D foliage directly within Adobe Photoshop.
Dell builds a solid entry level workstation for DCC, CAD applications
As corporations move to cut costs and bring corporate media, CAD, digital video editing, and other DCC jobs in house, computer manufacturers have taken note that many companies, especially the smaller businesses, don't have the need for the latest dual Xeon workstations.
For the large format cinema industry, size matters. After all, the point of projecting images from 70mm prints onto screens eight stories high and up to 120 feet wide is to bring audiences into an all-encompassing visual experience, one far more involving than being passive observers of entertainment on a distant screen as with conventional 35mm feature films.
