Apple Ships 17-Inch PowerBook
Xserve cluster node also arrives

More than two months after its introduction and a month later than expected, Apple has begun shipping its new 17-inch PowerBook. The new model, which debuted at the Macworld Expo in January, includes a 17-inch LCD display boasting a screen resolution of 1,440 x 900 pixels. Apple has also started shipping a new cluster node for its Xserve line of G4-based rackmount servers. Both are available now.

Create DVD Menu Transitions with DVDA

Sonic Foundry has entered the DVD authoring market with their newest product, DVD Architect® (DVDA). This 1.0 version is packed with basic features, all of which are required for authoring fairly deep DVD menu structures and flows. However, missing from this package is the ability to create transitions from one menu to another. Actually, very few authoring applications have this ability, but many do allow for unique mpg files to be played following a button selection and prior to the actual selected media. Even though this feature is missing at all levels in the 1.0 version of DVDA, there are indeed methods and techniques that allow users to get more depth out of the application than expected, albeit with a workaround or two.

Vegas 4: Even Better
Sonic Foundry improves its nonlinear editing software, adds optional DVD authoring

Sonic Foundry has done it again. The newest version of its powerful nonlinear editing software package, Vegas 4 (download for $489; boxed version $559) is on the loose. Now, without any DV hardware at all except for a 1394 I/O card which can be purchased almost anywhere for less than $30, you can edit video on a Windows PC in real time at a highly professional level. Here's our review.
