![]() When a Warranty isn't really a Warranty Editorial columnist and A/V guru Gary Kayye has been on the road, taking a close-up look at ProAV dealers across the USA and Canada. The upshot of his two year tour? He has a bone to pick with the way long-term warranties from manufacturers have become, frankly, bloated, confusing and just plain stupid. "Half this game is 90% mental." -- Yogi Berra If Yogi Berra had been a business presenter instead of a baseball player, he might have said, "Half of creating a presentation is 90% locating material." In fact, a recent survey of presentation professionals identified "locating up-to-date material" as one of presenters' biggest challenges. How do you manage presentation content effectively so you can access current material quickly and easily?
![]() The DVD market continues to expand rapidly The DVD market has seen over three years of stupendous growth, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The technology has caught the imagination and interest of consumers. DVD set-top box players have boomed in sales due to the price-elasticity of this segment. As of December, 2002 the average selling price of DVD players has fallen from $504 in July 1998 to $129 in major retail outlets, and some units are going for as low as $59. In the year 2003, the overall DVD market is poised to explode again as DVD enters new markets. ![]() 20 seamless material tiles We continue our ongoing mission to fill your hard drives with free goodies this week with our first collection of seamlessly tiling patterns for Adobe Photoshop. The collection includes 20 individual tiles that offer various surface textures for use in Photoshop 7. ![]() What proactive measures can media divisions take to remain intact—or remain at all? This is a dangerous time for in-house media creators. Although you may not be walking around wearing sandwich boards and offering to edit for food, many of your colleagues have found themselves out of work, working on a dramatically reduced staff, or arriving at work each day wondering, “Will this be my last day here?” It’s unpleasant, but also not surprising. Although many presidents and CEOs have shown a deep appreciation for the functions of the business-media producer, the media division remains a potential target for downsizing or total elimination. The problem is that media divisions often contribute “soft” benefits—those that are difficult to measure in dollar income. As effective as video and multimedia are in training and sales applications, there doesn’t seem to be any precise metric for measuring the revenue that results directly or indirectly from media. At public companies, poor financial performance just adds to the peril. “Things worsen every time our stock drops,” one producer told me. “We’re squeezing every nickel until Jefferson cries.” Tired of Hand-Me-Downs?
