Networked projectors are starting to act an awful lot like PCs

When networked projectors first appeared on the scene in 2000, most offered connection to a LAN or WAN as an option. But the Moore’s Law-bending advancements being made in the microprocessor industry are changing all that. Smaller and more powerful silicon chips mean manufacturers can now build their projectors with an integrated board inside—or at least nearby, via a peripheral box—that functions as the device’s server.

Training in Style
The beauty of Wella’s new Manhattan hair-care education facility is not only skin deep—it goes right to the heart of the AV infrastructure.

Looks aren’t everything.Throw in brains, however, and you’re onto something. Clearly that’s the thinking behind The Studio, Wella’s state-of-the-art training facility where 12,000 hair-care professionals will convene each year. Located on the lobby level of New York City’s Rockefeller Center—home to NBC Studios—the recently opened 7,000-square-foot space is both a classroom and a showcase where high-tech multimedia and presentation technology are used to teach cosmetologists the latest techniques in hair cutting, coloring and care.

Star Wars Episode II in IMAX
Gotta see it!

OK, everyone knows I am an avid Star Wars fan and write about it every chance I get. But, this time it’s special and something that anyone in our industry -- even Star Wars non-fans (otherwise known as Star Trek dweebs) would be interested in. Tomorrow, Friday November 1, in the USA and Canada, the IMAX version (digitally mastered and converted directly to IMAX) of Star Wars Episode II debuts in 70 cities.

Enhanced Automation
Qarbon.com’s ViewletBuilder Pro 3

Until recently, generating online demos and interactive training modules was often a fairly daunting process. Using programs like Macromedia Flash and Director forced designers to focus more on the technology than the content. If you can relate to this problem, you might want to take a look at Qarbon.com’s ViewletBuilder Pro 3 ($899). ViewletBuilder Pro significantly streamlines the process of making online demos and tutorials by automating many of the more tedious aspects of production.
